Short answer: a butterfly knife trainer is a balisong with a blunt, unsharpened edge. You learn the moves on it, you drop it a few hundred times, and nobody needs a bandage. Every balisong we make can be ordered as a trainer or as a live blade, at the same price, using the blade choice above Add to Cart on the product page.

What a butterfly knife trainer actually is
A balisong has two handles that rotate freely around the blade tang. There is no spring and no lock doing the work for you, which is the whole appeal and also the whole problem. Every move ends with a catch, and a missed catch on a sharp knife lands edge first more often than you would like.
A trainer takes the edge out of that equation. The handles, the pins, the pivots and the blade shape stay as they are. The edge is simply never ground, so a bad catch costs you a bruise and some pride instead of a trip to urgent care. Pride heals faster.
Plenty of trainers on the market are a different animal: a cheap bar of metal with holes in it, or a plastic blade that weighs about as much as a guitar pick. Those teach you timing for a knife you do not own. If you want the background on why handle build changes the feel, our guide to balisong construction covers channel and sandwich handles properly.
Trainer vs live blade, side by side
| Edge | Trainer: blunt, never sharpened. Live: sharpened and ready to use. |
| Handles, pins and pivots | The same on both. It is the same knife. |
| Price on our balisongs | The same on both. You pay for the knife, not for the edge. |
| Best for | Trainer: learning openings, closings, rollovers and aerials. Live: everyday use and moves you can already do cleanly. |
| What a missed catch costs | Trainer: a bruise. Live: stitches, if you are unlucky. |
| How you order it | Pick Trainer Blade or Live Blade on the product page. Live is selected unless you change it. |
Who should buy a trainer
Anyone who has never flipped. This is not a judgment on your hands. Every flipper who has been at it for years still learns new moves on a blunt knife first, and the ones who skipped that step tend to have a story and a scar to go with it.
Anyone learning aerials. Once the knife leaves your hand, all bets are off. There is no version of an aerial that is sensible to learn on a sharp edge, however confident you feel after a coffee.
Collectors who mostly flip and rarely cut. If the knife spends its life on a desk being spun during phone calls, an edge adds risk and adds nothing else.
Groups and gift buyers. Our Set of 6 balisong listings take the same blade choice, so a set of six matching balisongs can come as trainers for a group that wants to learn together without a first aid kit on the table.
Who should buy the live blade
If you want a balisong that cuts, buy the live blade. If you can already open and close cleanly with your eyes on the conversation rather than the knife, buy the live blade. If you are not sure, a lot of people end up with one of each, which is the sort of problem knife people enjoy having.
Why the same knife beats a cheap trainer
Flipping is mostly timing, and timing comes from weight and balance. A light trainer rotates faster and stops sooner than a forged balisong with brass liners or a Damascus blade. Learn on the light one and the first week on a real knife feels like someone swapped your hands. You overshoot, you catch late, and the edge does the rest.
Learning on the trainer version of the knife you actually want skips that whole recalibration. When you are ready to move on, the live blade feels familiar on the first open. That is the main reason we offer it this way rather than selling a separate generic trainer.

A sensible way to practice
| Stage 1 | Basic open and close until the catch is boring. Boring is the goal. |
| Stage 2 | Learn which handle is which without looking. The bite handle sits on the edge side, the safe handle on the other. |
| Stage 3 | Add one move at a time, such as the rollover, and repeat it slowly before you speed it up. |
| Stage 4 | Aerials and fast combinations, on the trainer only. |
| Stage 5 | Repeat the moves you can do cleanly on a live blade, starting slow again. |
The full list of moves, in the order worth learning them, lives in our butterfly knife tricks guide. Practice over a bed or a carpet. Concrete is very good at finding the one corner of a handle you cared about.
A blunt edge is not a soft knife
A trainer is still a steel balisong swinging at speed. It will still rap your knuckles, and it will still dent the coffee table if you drop it. Build the habits you want on the live blade now: grip near the pivot and check the latch before every move.
Care is the same as any balisong. A drop of oil on the pivots now and then, and a look at the pivot screws on sandwich builds when the action starts to feel loose. Our guide to channel, sandwich and skeletonized handles explains why some builds need that more than others.
Trainers and the law
A trainer has no cutting edge, but that does not make it legal everywhere a sharp balisong is not. Some statutes are written around the edge and some around the mechanism, and a trainer has the same mechanism. We do not give legal advice, so check your own state statute and city ordinance before you buy. Our butterfly knife laws guide is a good place to start the reading.
How to order a trainer from us
Open any knife in our balisong butterfly knives collection or the Damascus balisong collection. Above Add to Cart you will see two options, Live Blade and Trainer Blade. Live Blade is selected by default, so if you want the trainer, click it before you add the knife to your cart.
Your cart and your order confirmation both show the blade you picked, written as Trainer, blunt edge or Live, sharpened edge. If it says the wrong one, fix it before checkout or contact us straight after ordering and we will sort it before the knife leaves the bench.
Questions people ask
Is a butterfly knife trainer cheaper than a live blade?
Not on our balisongs. The trainer is the same knife with the edge left unsharpened, so it costs the same as the live blade.
Does a trainer feel the same as the live knife?
That is the point of ordering it this way. The handles, pins, pivots and blade shape are the same, so the weight and the rotation carry over when you move to the live blade.
Can I buy a trainer and a live blade of the same knife?
Yes. Add the knife once with Trainer Blade selected and once with Live Blade selected. They show as two separate lines in your cart.
How long should a beginner stay on a trainer?
Until the basic open and close happen without you thinking about them, and then a bit longer. There is no prize for graduating early. Keep using the trainer for every new move, even after you own a live blade.
Can I get the Set of 6 as trainers?
Yes. The Set of 6 balisong listings have the same blade choice, and it applies to the whole set.
Is a trainer a toy?
No. It is a full metal balisong without an edge. Supervise anyone young who picks it up, and store it the way you would store any knife.
