A folding knife earns its keep by being the one you actually have on you. These are our pocket knives and folders: slip joints, liner locks, lock backs and multi-blade patterns, all hand-forged rather than assembled from bought-in blanks.Steels run across our own 1095 and 15n20 Damascus, D2 tool steel and 440C stainless, hardened to 58 to 60 HRC. Handle scales include buffalo horn, ram horn, camel bone, rose wood, brass and G10. Blades are 2.5 to 4 inches with overall lengths from 6 to 12 inches, and most ship with a leather sheath or pouch.Damascus holds a fine edge and takes a beautiful pattern but wants drying and a wipe of oil. 440C shrugs off damp pockets and coastal air. D2 sits between the two: tougher than stainless, more weather-tolerant than plain carbon.Choosing a folderEveryday carry: a 3 inch blade covers almost every daily task and stays legal in more places than a longer one.Pocket clip: useful if you carry in jeans; less so if the knife lives in a bag or a coat pocket.Gift: engraved folders are our most common gift order. Initials, a date or a short message, up to 20 characters.Common questionsWill a Damascus folder rust?It can if it is put away wet, because the carbon layers are reactive. Dry it, wipe a little mineral oil along the blade, and it will outlast you. If it will live in a tackle box or a boat, choose 440C instead.How do I sharpen one?A normal whetstone at roughly 20 degrees.
