This is the full Black Mamba Knives catalogue – every hand-forged blade we currently have available, gathered in one place. Hunting and skinning knives, bowies, folding pocket knives and balisongs, chef knives and cleavers, karambits, daggers, tomahawks, swords and straight razors all sit here alongside the specialist collections. If you know roughly what you want but not which family it belongs to, this is the page to browse.

What hand-forged actually means at Black Mamba. Every blade is heated, hammered and folded by hand – no stock removal from pre-made bar stock, and no laser-etched fake pattern. Layers are forge-welded in the fire, drawn out, folded and re-welded, usually to 200 or more layers, then ground, heat treated to 58-60 HRC and acid etched to reveal the pattern.

Is Damascus steel better than regular steel? It is not automatically harder, but our high-carbon layer combinations hold an edge well and sharpen easily on a stone. The real difference is that the pattern in each blade is created in the fire and never repeats, so every knife is one of one.

How do I stop Damascus from rusting? It is high-carbon steel, not stainless. Dry the blade after use and keep a light film of mineral or gun oil on it; store it outside the sheath for long periods.

Does every knife include a sheath? Fixed blades ship with hand-stitched leather sheaths, folders with a leather pouch, and everything comes with a certificate of authenticity.

Hand forged knives made in the USA, and what that phrase is worth

Almost every knife sold in America is stamped: a blade punched out of rolled sheet, ground, and fitted with a moulded handle. Hand forged knives are made the other way round. The steel is heated and shaped under a hammer before anyone grinds a bevel, which is what lets a maker put thickness where the blade needs it and take it away where it does not.

Everything on this page is forged, ground, heat treated and finished in our own workshop in Memphis, Tennessee. Not designed here and assembled elsewhere. Not an imported blade with a handle fitted on arrival. The billet is welded and drawn out on our own press, the heat treat happens on the same benches, and the knife is inspected by the person who made it before it goes in a box.

That distinction matters because the wording on a listing usually hides it. Made in USA is a claim about the blade. Assembled in USA, handcrafted in USA and finished in USA are claims about the last step only, and normally mean the blade arrived from somewhere else. We wrote the full breakdown in best Damascus knives made in the USA.

What hand forging actually buys you

  • A thinner grind behind the edge. A factory builds in a safety margin for its warranty department. A maker who will re-sharpen the knife himself does not.
  • A handle fitted to the tang rather than moulded around it, which is why the transition is flush instead of stepped.
  • Judgement at every stage. If a weld is not clean the billet goes back in the fire rather than down the line.
  • A knife that can be repaired. Re-handled, re-profiled or re-etched in ten years by the shop that made it. Not a service a factory offers.
  • No two the same. Natural handle materials and a folded billet mean the piece you receive is the piece in the photograph.

Custom Damascus knives and one-off work

Because these are hand forged rather than tooled, custom work is a change of plan rather than a change of factory. Handle material, blade length, finish, bolsters and spacers can all be specified, and custom Damascus steel knives are quoted per piece because the bench time varies with what you ask for. Engraving is a paid option at checkout at $29, done in our own shop before the knife ships.

If you want to see the process rather than read about it, hand forged vs factory made knives covers what the extra money buys and when a factory knife is the smarter purchase. We do say that out loud, because sometimes it is.

What is in this collection

Over 440 hand forged knives across every category we make: hunting and skinning knives, bowies, folding pocket knives, balisongs, chef and kitchen knives, cleavers, daggers, push daggers, karambits, trackers, tomahawks and swords.

Steels are layered 1095 and 15N20 Damascus at 58 to 60 HRC, D2 tool steel at 58 to 62, 440C stainless and VG10. Handles are stag antler, buffalo and ram horn, camel bone, kamagong, rosewood, walnut burl, olive burl, micarta, G10, brass and copper. Every fixed blade ships with a hand stitched leather sheath.

Are these really hand forged? Yes. The billets are welded, drawn out and folded on our own press before any blade is ground, and the heat treat happens on the same benches. We do not buy in finished blades and fit handles to them.

Where are they made? Memphis, Tennessee, since 2009. There is no second imported line under another label.

Can I order a custom hand forged knife? Yes. Handle material, blade length and finish are all specifiable, and the work is quoted per piece.

Is hand forged better than stock removal? Not automatically. A well made stock removal knife is a good knife. What forging changes is where the steel is thick and thin, and it makes pattern welded Damascus possible at all.

Do hand forged knives hold an edge better? Edge holding comes from the steel and the heat treat, not from the forging. What forging gives you is geometry and the ability to layer two steels together.
