D2 Tool Steel Knives

What is D2 steel used for? Originally industrial die and punch work - the same reason it makes a good knife. It resists abrasion, so it stays sharp through rope, cardboard, hide and bone far longer than 1095 or 440C.

Is D2 tool steel stainless? Not quite. At around 12% chromium it is often called semi-stainless: far more corrosion resistant than plain high-carbon steel, but it will still spot if left wet. Dry it after use and it will look new for years.

D2 vs 440C - which is better? D2 holds an edge noticeably longer; 440C resists rust better and is easier to sharpen. Choose D2 for hard use and long cutting sessions, 440C for wet environments and low maintenance.

Is D2 hard to sharpen? Harder than most, yes. Use a diamond or ceramic stone rather than a soft waterstone, take your time, and finish on a strop. The reward is that you sharpen far less often.

What comes in the box? A hand-stitched leather sheath or pouch, a certificate of authenticity, and care instructions.

Steel arguments get heated online, so here is the short honest version. No steel wins on everything — you are choosing which compromise you want to live with.

Put plainly: D2 is the choice when the knife has a job. Damascus is the choice when the knife is also an object. Plenty of people own both, which is generally how this ends.

More questions

Is D2 good for a hunting knife? Very. Field dressing dulls a blade fast — hide, hair and bone are abrasive — and D2 is exactly the steel that resists abrasion. Dry it before it goes back in the sheath and it will be fine.

Will a D2 blade rust? It can spot if it is left wet or stored in a damp sheath, because 12% chromium is not the same as a true stainless. In practice, wiping it dry after use is the whole maintenance routine.

What hardness are your D2 blades? 58 to 62 HRC depending on the pattern — thinner kitchen blades sit at the higher end, choppers at the lower end so they take impact without chipping.

Is D2 better than Damascus? For pure cutting performance and low upkeep, yes. For appearance and collectability, no. They are answers to different questions, which is why we forge both.
