Stainless steel handles are the lightest and lowest-maintenance option we build. A stainless balisong swings faster than a brass one, does not tarnish, and shrugs off sweat and humidity, which is why it is the usual choice for anyone who actually carries and handles the knife every day rather than keeping it in a case. Ours are built in Memphis with hand-fitted bolsters and inserts in bone, buffalo horn, ram horn, kamagong and burl wood.
Stainless or brass for flipping? Stainless is quicker and less tiring over a long session. Brass is heavier and carries more momentum, which some people find easier to control at first. Try brass if you are learning, stainless if you already flip.
Is the blade stainless too? Not usually. Most of our balisong blades are hand-forged high-carbon Damascus or D2 tool steel, both of which will spot if you leave them wet. Wipe the blade dry and oil it every few weeks even though the handles need nothing.
Will the handles scratch? Fine scratches are normal on any handle you use. They buff out with a grey scouring pad worked in one direction.
Are these live blades? Yes, sharpened and heat treated. We do not make blunt trainers.
