Every knife on this site was made by hand in our own workshop. This is the page where you say what we make next.

There are two ways to do it. If your idea is close to something we already make, use one of the four builders below — pick the steel, the handle, the hardware and the engraving, watch the price move as you go, and order it like anything else. If what you want does not exist on any list, draw it instead and we will quote it by hand.

Either way the knife is cut from raw stock to your specification. Nothing is pulled off a shelf and relabelled.

Start with a builder

Why have one made

You stop compromising on the one thing

Almost everyone buying a knife settles for something. The steel is right but the handle is plastic. The blade is the shape you wanted but two inches too long. Building it removes the compromise, and it is usually the compromise people regret a year later, not the price.

It costs less than people expect

A hand-made knife off our shelf sits around two hundred dollars. A build with good steel, a wood handle and a name on the blade lands in the same place. You are not paying a premium for the word custom, because every knife here is made by the same hands either way.

It is the one gift that never gets returned

A knife with the right date on the blade does not end up in a drawer. Groomsmen sets, retirements, a first season in the field: these are the orders we see most, and they are the ones people photograph.

How it works

  1. Configure or drawWork down a builder, or sketch it on the drawing pad. Every choice shows what it adds and the running total is always on screen.
  2. Order or get a quoteBuilds check out like anything else. Drawings and anything we price by hand come back to you by email first — nothing is charged until you agree to the number.
  3. We make itYour spec prints at the bench. Blade cut and ground, handle fitted, hardware set, edge finished by hand. Two to three weeks.
  4. It shipsFree expedited shipping inside the US, worldwide everywhere else, and a photo of the finished knife before it leaves.

What it costs

Builders start at $119 to $149 depending on the type. A well-specified build with good steel, a wood or horn handle, engraving and a proper sheath usually lands between $250 and $400. Damascus, hand engraving and rare handle materials take it higher; there is no upper limit and no minimum order beyond one knife.

Ten or more is a workshop run rather than a cart order. Choose 10 or more in the quantity step of any builder and the page swaps to a short quote form — unit price drops with volume and engraving is set up once for the whole batch.

Questions people ask first

How long does a custom knife take?

Two to three weeks of bench time, then shipping. Hand engraving adds about a week because it is cut by hand, not by machine. If you have a date to hit, say so and we will tell you honestly whether we can make it.

Can I change my mind after I order?

Yes, as long as we have not started cutting. Email us within a day of ordering and we will change anything you like at no charge. After the blade is cut it is your knife and nobody else can use it, so at that point we cannot.

What if I want a material that is not on the list?

Pick Something else in the handle step of any builder and tell us what you have in mind. We work with mammoth tooth, meteorite, exotic burls and customer-supplied material more often than the list suggests. You get a price by email before anything is charged.

Can I send a photo or a drawing instead of using a builder?

Yes — that is what the drawing pad is for. Sketch it in the browser and send it over, or reply to our email with a photo. A napkin sketch is a perfectly good brief.

Is the engraving included in the price shown?

Yes. The price you see already includes whichever engraving option you selected, setup included. Engraving is $29 and it is cut in our own shop, not sent out.

Do you ship outside the United States?

Yes. Shipping inside the US is free and expedited. International orders ship worldwide and the cost is calculated at checkout.

Will you copy another maker's knife exactly?

No. We will build something in the same spirit, at the same size, with the features you actually want, and it will be ours. Cloning another maker's work is not something we do.

Would rather just talk to someone?

Email sales@blackmambaknives.com or call 901 669 8608. A real person replies within one working day, and the consultation costs nothing whether you order or not.

Please check your local law before ordering.

Cannot find it in the list? Draw it.

Sketch the blade and the handle you have in mind. It does not need to be neat — a rough outline tells us more than a paragraph does. Mark lengths, angles or anything unusual straight on the drawing.
