Good for: someone who wants Damascus without an announcement. Closed, it reads as a plain wood-handled folder; open, the blade does all the talking.

Wood in the hand

Timber does not pull heat out of your palm the way brass and steel do, which matters more than it sounds if you flip outdoors in the cold. It is also quieter against the blade than bare metal channels, so the knife makes less noise through a long session. The panels sit between engraved steel bolsters and are pinned in brass, which protects the wood at both ends, where handles take their knocks.

Where the finish shows

Look at the places that are hard to photograph: the line where the bolster meets the wood, whether the two handles sit level when the knife is closed, how evenly the grind runs out at the tip. Those are the joints a factory has to rush and a person can take time over. At 7.23 oz the knife has enough mass that a loose fit would be obvious in the first ten openings, and it is not.

The blade

352 layers of 1095 and 15N20, forge welded and folded, then etched to bring out the contrast between the two steels. At 58–60 HRC it takes a very fine edge and keeps it well past the point where a softer stainless would need attention. Being high carbon, it will also patina, and the gray film that develops over the first year sits over the pattern without hiding it.

Care

Dry the steel each time you finish with it and leave a trace of oil across the flats. For the wood, once or twice a year is enough: a little furniture wax rubbed in with a cloth and buffed back off. That stops the panels drying out and shrinking away from the pins, which is the one failure mode a wood-handled knife actually has. Keep it away from hot water.

Common questions

Will it rust? It can. Do Damascus knives rust explains exactly what to expect and what to do about it.

Is handmade really different? We make the case, with the counterarguments, in hand-forged versus factory made.

What else has a wood handle? The DB-29 Damascus balisong is the closest sibling in a lighter build.
