Handle – Brass with walnut burl Wood Inserts

Its purpose: learning to flip on something that feels substantial without costing a great deal. Brass gives it weight and the plain blade keeps the price down, which is a sensible combination for a first serious balisong.

Care: this is a high carbon steel blade with a plain polished finish, and plain polished carbon steel shows everything. Fingerprints will etch into it if they are left for a few days, and a bright blade makes every one of them visible in a way a matte or etched surface would not. Wipe it down after handling and keep a very light film of oil on it. The brass will tarnish and can be polished back. Walnut burl is figured wood with swirling grain and it is slightly more porous than straight-grained walnut, so an occasional drop of oil rubbed in keeps it from drying and lifting at the edges of the brass channel.

About the blade steel

This model is listed as high carbon steel and the blade in the photograph is a plain, uniform, brightly finished blade. It is a simple, tough steel that sharpens easily on any stone, takes a keen edge, and rusts if you neglect it. That is the honest description. Where a simple carbon steel sits against the tool steels and stainless grades is set out in the steel comparison chart, which is the right place to start if you are choosing between models on steel alone.

Walnut burl, and why no two match

Burl is wood taken from a growth on the trunk where the grain has grown in knots and swirls rather than straight lines. It is prized because the figure is chaotic and no two pieces repeat. It is also slightly less stable than straight grain, which is why it is used as an insert set into brass rather than as a full handle taking the stress. Expect your inserts to look different from the photograph. That is the material doing what it is supposed to do.

A sensible first balisong

If you are learning, weight in the handles helps more than a fancy blade does, and dropping a knife at this price hurts less than dropping one at three times the money. Work through the basic openings and rollovers before you spend more. If you prefer a straight-grained dark wood to a figured one, the rosewood BMK-563 is the same idea with a quieter handle.

Questions before buying

Is it sharp on arrival? Yes. This is not a trainer and it will cut you while you are learning.

Will the brass stay bright? Not without polishing. It dulls to a warmer tone within months, which many owners prefer.

Can the wood be replaced if damaged? The inserts are set and pinned into the channels. Replacement is a workshop job, not a home one.
