What ten ounces does to a cut

Most hunting knives are built to be light. This one is not, and that changes how it works. Weight forward of your hand means the blade carries itself through a stroke instead of being pushed through it — you set the edge, lean, and the knife does the rest. Through a hide, a joint or a rib cartilage that is a real advantage. Through two hours of close trimming work it is a real disadvantage, because your wrist is holding up ten ounces the whole time. If you already like a heavy knife, this is the one. If you have never held one, it feels like a lot for five minutes and correct for the next thirty.

Where it belongs: whole-animal work in a barn or at a tailgate, where you are standing over the job and not crouched in the brush. A deep-bellied edge of five inches, so it skins in long pulls rather than short ones.

Antler is not wood

Stag is porous bone, and it comes with texture you did not choose — ridges, pits, and a color that varies from cream to hard brown along a single handle. That texture is the grip. Wet it, get blood on it, and it holds better than any polished scale. It has two weaknesses. It will not tolerate soaking, because water gets into the porosity and antler swells, then shrinks unevenly as it dries. And it yellows. A ten-year-old stag handle is noticeably warmer in color than a new one, which most owners consider an improvement and nobody can prevent. Olive burl alongside it darkens more slowly, so the two materials drift apart over time rather than staying matched.

Care for these materials: dry the blade the moment you finish, then oil it, because the flats are high-carbon and blood eats into them overnight. Never run the handle under a hot tap. If the antler looks chalky, a fingertip of paste wax buffed off brings it back — once a year and no more, because over-fed antler goes tacky. The buffalo horn spacers and the Damascus clip take the same treatment as the blade. Details are in Damascus knife care and sharpening.

Asked and answered

Is every handle different? Yes, unavoidably. Antler is cut from a shed rack, so the piece decides the shape and figure, not us.

Too heavy for a belt? Ten ounces plus a leather sheath is a noticeable load on a thin belt. It is fine on a proper one.

Want the same shape lighter? The Egyptian Cobra skinner runs shorter and under nine ounces. If terms like belly, ricasso and clip are new, the parts of a knife explained is a short read.

The BMK-108 is a really nice looking knife I got for my friend’s 50th B-day. I spend a significant amount of time on the internet to find a special, high rated knife. I personally own many good quality knives from Czech Republic, Germany, Japan and US. But since I’ve never had Damascus design, I was a little skeptical especially when you can see on the market so many of fake, low quality and cheaply made Damascus knives or steel shanks which are imported to US from other countries. After getting all my questions answered with unbelievable speed by Mark Kovalsky I finally decided to get one for my friend. I am looking forward to working with Mark again in near future to get a few more of such beautiful knives.
