Eight and a half ounces is heavy for a folder

Pearl shell is beautiful and it is brittle
Shell inlay is nacre, the same material that lines an oyster. It has an iridescence no synthetic reproduces and the brittleness of a hard ceramic: it resists scratching and cracks if you drop the knife on tile. It is also thin, so abrasive polish goes straight through the layer that carries the color. Clean it with a damp cloth and nothing else. Damascus bolsters and how they age
The bolsters are pattern-welded steel, etched like the blade, and they are the part of this knife your fingers touch constantly. Skin oil, keys and pocket lint dull the etch over a year or two until the contrast fades. A light re-etch brings it back, but the knife looks its best when it is looked after rather than carried hard.
Storage and oiling: the pivot is the weak point on any folder, and on this one it sits between two materials that dislike solvents. Keep oil to a single drop at the joint and wipe away what escapes before it reaches the shell. Dry the blade every time before it folds shut. Store it flat in a box, not the leather. Is the shell natural? Yes, natural nacre. The color shift comes from the layered structure of the shell, not from a dye or a coating.
Can I carry it every day? You can. Expect the bolster etch to soften and the shell to pick up fine marks. Many owners keep it for occasions instead.
