Description

The Silver-spotted is one of three butterflies on this bench, the Adonis and the Hairstreak being the other two, and like the skipper it borrows its name from it is built light for its size. What arrives is a full-size Filipino balisong with a satin-finished clip point, a swage running back from the tip along the spine, and a pair of channel handles drilled straight through in a repeating rhythm of wide and narrow ports.

Blade length 12 cm
Steel High carbon steel
Hardness 58–60 HRC, oil tempered
Handle – High Carbon Steel

Handles you can see daylight through

Those ports are not ornament alone. Every hole taken out of a steel channel removes mass from the far end of the arc, and the further from the pivot that metal disappears, the more the balance walks back toward your hand. The knife then starts a rotation early and parks where you put it, which is the reason ported handles became standard on balisongs meant to be worked rather than shelved. Run a thumb around the inside of a port and you will find the edge broken by hand. That step is the whole difference between a knife you can hold for an hour and one that chews a knuckle by the third pass.

Bare metal, no panels

Nothing organic is set into these handles. Steel runs from latch to pivot on both sides, and that carries a consequence worth understanding before it surprises you. Uncoated steel takes a patina, and it takes it first where your skin visits most often: the flat a thumb parks on, the corner that rides your palm through a rollover. Expect a soft gray haze at those spots within a few weeks of steady handling, spreading and deepening across a season. Kept dry and given a film of oil now and then, that stays a patina and looks better every year. Left damp in a pocket it turns into rust instead, and the entire difference between those two outcomes is habit.

How to read pattern work when you are shopping

Layered steel is the thing buyers ask about most in this category, so it helps to know how the real article behaves. A forge-welded billet is stacked from two alloys of differing nickel content: one goes dark under acid, the other shrugs the acid off and stays bright, and folding then drawing the billet out multiplies the boundaries between them. Because that structure runs through the full thickness of the bar rather than sitting on its face, the figure crosses the spine and shows again along the edge bevel, where the grind cuts the same layers at a fresh angle. Surface printing stops at the skin and gives itself away. Our notes on telling forged Damascus from printed set out the checks you can run from a photograph before any money changes hands.

Where it sits in the rack

Blanks are cut, drilled, heat treated, fitted, sharpened and function-tested here in Memphis, then boxed alongside a black leather belt sheath, hand-sewn and closed by a riveted strap. Want the same blade length in a serpentine profile instead of a clip point? The Hairstreak snake-blade pair is the sibling model on the next shelf, and the origins of the Filipino balisong explain why these handles fold around the blade instead of swinging to one side.
