Two ways to get this right
Most knife gifts for women go wrong in one of two directions. Mother's Day, without the candle
Mother's Day falls on the second Sunday of May, and the usual options are flowers that last a week and a candle she will politely never light. A knife is an odd choice until you remember how many mothers do the cooking for a whole household with one dull blade. A proper chef knife fixes that on the first evening. If she is the outdoors type, a small fixed blade with her initials on it will get more use than anything else she unwraps that day.
Timing matters. In stock knives ship in two to three business days, and made to order pieces take two to three weeks, so order early in April if the knife you want is not in stock.
Steel and handles, in plain terms
The ladies knives use three steels. Damascus gives the layered pattern and takes a very fine edge, but it is high carbon and wants wiping dry after use. D2 is a tough tool steel that holds an edge a long time. 14C28N is a stainless steel that shrugs off damp kitchens and handbags. If she is not going to oil a blade, pick 14C28N. Handles are mostly about looks and grip. Micarta and resin are tough and easy to clean. Mother of pearl and white buffalo bone are prettier and ask for a little more care.
