Handle – Stainless Steel with rose wood Inserts

Fits: the buyer who wants a balisong that looks warm rather than clinical. Steel and bone knives read cold in the hand and in a photograph. This one does not.

Rose wood, and what it becomes

Rose wood is oily by nature, which is why it finishes to a satin sheen without much help and why glue historically struggles to bond it. Ours is pinned into the channel, so that is not your problem. The color moves over the years, and it does not move in the direction most people expect: rather than darkening, rose wood exposed to daylight tends to lose some of its purple note and settle toward a flatter reddish brown. Keeping it in a drawer keeps it vivid for longer. A trace of oil once a year is plenty, and too much oil will leave the surface tacky instead of nourished. The knife oil guide covers which ones dry and which ones sit.

The filework on the spine

Those notches behind the ricasso are cut by hand, and they are functional as well as decorative: they give a thumb something to lock against for controlled cuts. They also collect grime, so a toothbrush belongs in your cleaning routine. On a knife that lives in a pocket they will darken faster than the flats, which most owners come to like.

Where the steel puts you

D2 is the sensible middle of our range. It holds off surface rust much longer than simple carbon steel does, keeps a working edge a long time, and asks for patience when you finally do sharpen it. It is not a stainless steel and it is not maintenance free, so wipe it before it goes away wet. If you want the full ladder from soft carbon up to the harder tool steels, the steel comparison lays out the trades plainly. For the same blade behind a paler, more figured wood, the walnut handled version is the direct alternative.

Things buyers check

Are the inserts pinned or glued? Pinned through the channel, which is why they do not lift when the wood moves.

Can the filework be smoothed out? It could be, but it would take material off the spine and we would not recommend it.

Does it arrive tight or loose? Tuned to flip out of the box, tight enough that it will not fall open in a pocket.

Will the wood dent? Rose wood is hard but not immune. Expect small compression marks around the pins after heavy pocket use; they burnish out with handling rather than needing repair.
