The hook, honestly
A gut hook is a specialist. Used the way it was designed, it turns a careful ten-minute cut into a single pull and takes the risk of puncturing the stomach off the table. Used for anything else it is dead weight and a snag hazard. It will not open envelopes, it will not cut rope well, and it needs a round abrasive rather than a stone to bring back. Buy this because you dress deer, not because the shape looks capable.
Suited to: hunters who process their own animals, and people who want the tool to look like it belongs on a wall between seasons. Under six ounces, it hangs on a belt all day without reminding you it is there.
How this handle ages
Four materials, four rates of change. Walnut darkens and warms; rose wood darkens faster and can go almost chocolate. The brass spacer will dull to a soft gold within months — polish it back if that bothers you, or let it go, because a bright brass line on an old handle looks wrong. The resin stays exactly as it is. That difference is what makes an old one of these look better than a new one: the wood moves and the resin holds still, so the contrast sharpens with time.
What it asks of you: this is folded carbon steel and it will grey over after the first animal. Let it. What you must not let it do is sit wet. Rinse, dry, and put a smear of oil on the flats before the knife goes back in a drawer. For the handle, a wipe of paste wax twice a year keeps the two woods from drying out at different speeds and lifting the brass. Do not sand it — sanding takes the wood down faster than the resin and leaves a ridge. Keep it out of the sheath in storage. If you want the theory behind the steel, read our Damascus hunting knife guide.
Questions worth asking
Is this too pretty to use? No, but it is nicer than it needs to be. If you want a knife you can lose in the leaves without regret, the smaller Blue Racer Lizard skinner costs less to be careless with.
Does the resin get slippery? Less than polished wood, more than horn. Wet hands are the limit of it. In practice you are holding wood, not resin, for most of the grip.
What comes with it? The leather sheath listed in the specification table above, stitched by hand and cut to this blade. Engraving is a paid option you add before you pay.
