Birthday Gifts for Him

Buying for a man who says he does not want anything is the oldest problem in gift shopping. A hand-forged knife solves it for a specific reason: it is useful enough that he will not feel guilty owning it, and good enough that he would never have spent the money on himself. That gap is exactly where a gift belongs.

Pick by what he already does, not by what he says he wants

Engraving turns a knife into a gift

An unengraved knife is a good present. An engraved one is his. Initials, a date, or a short line, up to 20 characters, engraved in our own shop before the piece is finished and boxed. It is a paid option rather than a free extra, and it is the single thing most likely to keep the knife out of a drawer.

Questions

Is a knife a safe gift to give a man? In practice yes, and it is one of the few gifts still in use a decade later. The old superstition about blades cutting a friendship comes with its own fix: he hands back a coin so the knife counts as bought. Tape a penny to the box.

What if he already has a knife? Most men who own one own the wrong second one. If he carries a folder, buy a fixed blade. If he has both, buy the premium piece he would never justify himself.

What do you engrave, and does it cost extra? Up to 20 characters, and yes, it is a paid add-on chosen before checkout. We would rather say so than hide the cost in the price of the knife.

How long does a personalised order take? Allow a fortnight before a fixed date. Tell us the date at checkout and we will be straight with you about whether it is possible.

Does it arrive gift ready? Yes. Presentation box, and every fixed blade ships with a hand-stitched leather sheath.

Are these made in the USA? Forged, ground, heat treated and finished in our own American shop, not assembled from imported blanks.

Milestone birthdays, and what to put on the blade

A birthday knife has one advantage over every other occasion: the number. A year engraved on a blade needs no explanation in thirty years, which is more than can be said for a message.

Getting it there on time

Birthdays are the one occasion people leave late. An unengraved knife in stock ships in two to three business days. Engraving adds around two weeks, because we send a proof and wait for approval before anything is cut. If the date is tight, tell us the date rather than the deadline you hope for, and we will say straight away whether it can be met.

What is a good birthday knife gift for a man? A three to three and a half inch locking folder with the year engraved on it. It is the knife most likely to be carried rather than shelved, and the year keeps meaning something.

What should I engrave on a birthday knife? The year, or initials and a year. Twenty characters is the limit and the shorter version almost always reads better on a blade.

Is a knife a good 21st birthday gift? It is a memorable one, and a first proper knife tends to get kept. Check your state and city rules on age and carry before ordering, since they differ.

How late can I order for a birthday? Two to three business days for an unengraved knife in stock. Around two weeks for anything engraved. Send us the date and we will tell you honestly.

What if he already has a pocket knife? Buy a different category rather than a second folder. A kitchen knife, a fixed blade or a traditional pattern are all things men with one folder usually do not own.
