Carry it for: everyday cutting. Boxes, cord, a blister pack, lunch. Seven inches open and five and a half ounces closed, with a clip so it rides at the top of a pocket instead of in the bottom of one.

The bolsters are Damascus too

Most folders in this price range use plain steel or brass bolsters and put the pattern only on the blade. Here the bolsters are pattern-welded as well, so the flowing lines run out of the blade and continue across the front of the handle. It is more work and more waste, because you have to forge and grind a second patterned piece to fit. It also means the bolsters etch and behave like the blade does — they are carbon steel, not stainless, and they want the same wipe-down.

Clip carry at five and a half ounces

Five and a half ounces is noticeable in a pocket. That weight is the price of steel bolsters and a full liner, and what you get for it is a folder that does not feel flimsy under load. The clip is mounted for tip-up carry with a lanyard hole beside it. If you want the same idea lighter, the Brown Raccoon runs 3.5 ounces; for a synthetic handle instead of wood, look at the Colubrid with G10 scales. Our EDC selection guide covers the trade-offs.

Brass liner file work

Run a thumb along the back of the handle and you will feel the brass liner has been filed into a repeating scalloped pattern along its exposed edge. It is decorative rather than functional, and it is done by hand with files after the liner is fitted, which is why the spacing wanders very slightly. A machine-cut pattern would be perfectly even and would look it.

Care: blade and bolsters are both high-carbon Damascus, so dry the whole knife rather than just the edge and keep a light film of oil on the steel. A drop of oil in the pivot every month or so keeps the action smooth. The wood scales are sealed but not waterproof — do not put the knife through a wash cycle, and if it gets soaked, open it and let it dry before it goes back in a pocket. Blow or brush lint out of the liner cutouts occasionally, since a folder collects more debris than a fixed blade ever does.

FAQs

Which way does the clip sit? Tip-up, on the handle beside the lanyard hole.

Are the bolsters stainless? No. They are pattern-welded carbon steel, same as the blade, and they need the same care.

Does it ship with a sheath? Yes, hand-stitched leather is included.

My hands were shaking after I unwrapped it when I looked at it for the first time.. To say I was in awe of how gorgeous this knife turned out would be an understatement.. I personally am not a rich man and have never been able to really feel like I got the best of anything before.. However, I do know that I bought one of the most beautiful, artistic, real, wonderful, functional art knives in the world. So thank you to BlackMamba knives
