Every fixed blade here ships with its sheath

A fixed blade knife with sheath is one purchase, not two, and it should be. A knife without a sheath is a knife you leave in a drawer, because there is no safe way to carry it and no good way to store it. Every fixed blade on this page comes with a hand stitched leather sheath cut and fitted to that specific blade, made on the same benches in Memphis, Tennessee where the knife was forged.

That is worth saying plainly because it is not the norm. A great many sheath knives sold online arrive with a generic pouch sized to a range rather than to the knife, and the difference shows the first time you draw it one handed.

What makes a good knife sheath

• Full grain leather, not bonded. Bonded leather is offcuts and glue pressed into a sheet. It looks right for a year and then delaminates at the welt.
• Stitched, not riveted alone. Rivets hold the two faces together. Stitching holds the edge closed under load, which is what stops the blade cutting its way out.
• A welt. A strip of leather set between the faces along the edge side, so the blade never touches the stitching. A sheath without one saws through its own thread.
• Retention that comes from fit. A well cut sheath holds the knife by friction at the guard. Straps are a backup, not the mechanism.
• Sized to the blade. The knife should go in and come out without being forced and without rattling.

Looking after a leather sheath

One rule matters more than all the others: do not store the knife in the sheath for months. Leather is tanned with salts and it holds moisture from the air. A carbon steel blade left inside one over a damp winter will come out spotted, and that is the single most common way a good knife gets ruined in a drawer. Carry it in the sheath, store it out of the sheath.

Beyond that, keep it dry, let it dry slowly and away from heat if it does get wet, and give it a light leather conditioner once a year. A sheath treated that way outlasts the person who bought it.

Should I oil the leather or the blade? Both, separately. Leather conditioner on the sheath once a year, and a light film of mineral oil on a carbon steel blade before storage.
