For: someone buying one balisong rather than starting a collection. There is no ornament here to get bored of and nothing on the blade that snags.
Rosewood against brass
Dark wood and yellow metal is a deliberately warm pairing, and both halves of it change. The brass loses its polish first, going from mirror to a soft gold within weeks of regular handling. The rosewood takes longer and moves the other way, gaining depth as the oils in your skin work into the surface and lift the figure. A year in, the contrast between the two is stronger than it was new. That is the argument for natural materials in a sentence.
What a narrow blade does
There is not much steel here, which is a virtue. The blade is thin behind the edge and slender in profile, so it slices well above its price and the whole knife stays light enough to practice with for an hour without your wrist complaining. The cost is at the tip. A fine upswept point in a hard steel breaks rather than bends, and a single hard landing on tile can take a millimeter off it.
The upkeep is real
The blade is high carbon steel with no chromium worth mentioning, and it will rust if you let it. That sounds worse than it is. Carbon steel of this kind takes an edge faster and finer than anything stainless, sharpens on any stone you own, and asks only that you dry it. Left alone in a humid room it will develop a gray patina, which is protective and which most owners come to prefer to bare steel. Left wet, it will pit, and pitting is permanent.
Bringing it back
If a spot of orange appears, deal with it that week rather than that year. A cork, a little oil and light pressure will lift young rust without touching the polish, and removing rust from a knife covers the harder cases. The wood needs no more than a dry wipe, and the brass needs a decision rather than a routine.
What owners ask
Does it arrive sharp? Yes, with a hand finished edge. Handle it accordingly the first time you open it.
Can I use this as a working knife? You can, but a balisong pivot is not built for pressure. Cut with it, do not lever with it.
What if I want colored scales? The ram horn and resin Damascus model goes the other way entirely.
