Built around: the handle. Brass and dense tropical hardwood is the traditional Filipino combination, and it gives this knife a weight and a warmth that stainless framed balisongs do not have.
Brass costs you and pays you
Brass is roughly ten percent denser than steel, so a brass framed handle swings heavier and carries more momentum through a rotation. Experienced flippers usually read that as quality; beginners often read it as hard work. It is genuinely more tiring over a long session. Brass is also soft. It marks where a stainless bolster would shrug, and after a year of pocket carry the corners will be rounded and the surface will be covered in small bright scratches under a brown tarnish. Some owners polish it back monthly. Others let it go and end up with something that looks like it has been in the family. Neither is wrong.
Kamagong and dry air
Kamagong is a Philippine ebony, extremely dense and naturally very dark, heavy enough that it barely floats. Dense timber like this moves less than open grained wood but it is not immune, and the enemy is dry heat rather than damp. A radiator, a car dashboard or a sunny windowsill will pull moisture out and can open a hairline gap at the brass. Store it somewhere ordinary and it will outlast you. Our own records name the wood two different ways across the listing, so treat the species line as the table gives it.
That blade shape
The tip is squared and angled rather than pointed, which is characteristic of older working balisongs. It is a poor piercing shape and a very good slicing one, and it is much harder to injure yourself with during a failed catch. Its surface is plain, bright steel with no figure in it. Quick answers
Will the brass turn my hand green? Occasionally, on damp skin. It washes off and it is harmless.
Is the wood finished? Sanded and buffed, not lacquered.
How long before the brass goes dark? Three to six months of regular carry, faster in summer. Sealed in a case it can stay bright for years.
