Made for: camp and field work that punishes a tip — prying open a seam, splitting kindling, driving through hide and cartilage — where a fine point would fold and this one will not.

Why the tanto point behaves the way it does

The edge runs straight to a corner instead of curving to a needle. All the steel that a drop point spends on a delicate tip stays behind the point here, so it takes abuse without rolling. The trade is real. You lose the belly that makes skinning and slicing easy, and you cannot roll this blade through a cut the way you would a curved one. If you mostly dress game, look at the Damascus hunting knife guide before you buy this one. Our rundown of blade shapes shows the difference side by side.

What twelve ounces feels like

Twelve ounces is heavy for a knife with a seven inch blade, and that is deliberate. The weight sits forward of your hand, so the knife carries itself into the cut and you steer rather than push. Chopping is easier. Detail work is harder, and an hour of fine carving will tire your forearm.

The scales and how they age

The scales are a layered orange and black material with a red spacer at the front and mosaic pins through the middle. The surface is sealed and will not swell, but the finish dulls where your palm rides it. A wipe with a soft cloth brings the gloss back. The mosaic pins stay bright.

Care: 1095 and 15N20 are both plain carbon steels, which is why the etch works and why the blade will spot if you leave it wet. Dry it the moment you finish, including the ricasso where water hides. A thin film of mineral oil once a month is enough. Keep the knife out of the leather sheath between trips — tanned leather holds moisture against steel and is the most common way these blades pick up rust.

FAQs

Is the point strong enough to pry with? Stronger than a clip point, but no fixed blade is a pry bar. Twisting a hardened carbon edge in a stiff seam can chip it.

Can I sharpen the angled tip? Yes, but treat the straight edge and the front bevel as two separate flats. Lay each one down on the stone on its own and do not try to sweep between them.

Does the pattern go all the way through? It does. The layers are forge welded through the whole bar, so sharpening exposes fresh pattern rather than wearing it off.
