Damascus Karambit Knife

Karambits with hand-forged Damascus blades and a proper finger ring. The curved talon profile originates from Southeast Asian farming tools and pulls through material rather than pushing, which is why it still appeals to collectors and self-defence trainers alike. Fixed and folding versions are both available, with G10, micarta and bone handle scales and a leather sheath included. Ring diameter and blade curve vary between models, so check the specifications if you plan to train with one rather than display it.

Why Damascus is harder on a curved blade

A karambit is the most awkward shape in the shop to forge in Damascus. On a straight blade the layers run parallel and the pattern lands where you expect it. On a hawkbill the steel is drawn round a tight curve, so the layers compress on the inside of the arc and stretch on the outside. Get the heat or the hammer wrong and the pattern crowds into a smear along the belly, which is exactly where the eye goes.

Done properly the curve becomes the feature: the pattern fans out along the spine and tightens through the belly, so the flow of the steel follows the shape of the knife. That is the difference between a Damascus karambit and a karambit with a pattern on it.

Damascus karambit questions

Is Damascus a good steel for a karambit? Yes for the pattern and the edge, with the usual caveat: our 1095 and 15N20 Damascus is reactive, so dry it and wipe a little oil along the blade. If it will live in a wet pocket, choose D2 or 440C instead.

How many layers are these? 352 layers is our standard billet, forge welded from 1095 and 15N20. The nickel in the 15N20 is what keeps those layers bright when the blade is etched.

Fixed or folding karambit? Fixed is stronger and faster to deploy; folding is legal in more places and easier to carry. Both are in the karambit collection.

Is the finger ring necessary? On a karambit, yes. The ring is what makes the grip retention work, and it is why the pattern exists at all.

Are these made in the USA? Forged, ground and finished in our own American shop, with a fitted leather sheath.
