The problem with buying for a husband is usually that he already owns whatever he wants. Two ways round it. The first is to buy the category he keeps not getting round to: almost every man who owns three folders owns no decent kitchen knife. What if he already owns a lot of knives? Buy a pattern rather than a size. A Laguiole folder, a chef knife or a karambit are the three that most collections are missing, and any of them is more interesting than a fourth bowie.
