Steel is the eleventh anniversary

The traditional anniversary list is genuinely useful here, because two of its entries are metal and both of them point at a blade. Iron is the sixth year and steel is the eleventh. A forged knife is not a stretch on either; it is the correct answer.

Buying for a man who buys his own things

The problem with buying for a husband is usually that he already owns whatever he wants. Two ways round it. The first is to buy the category he keeps not getting round to: almost every man who owns three folders owns no decent kitchen knife. The second is to buy the version he would not spend the money on himself, which is where premium handle materials and engraving earn their place.

What does not work is buying a bigger version of something he has. If he owns a good fixed blade, another fixed blade is a duplicate however handsome it is.

How long does engraving take? Around two weeks from order, against two to three business days for an unengraved knife in stock. If you have a date, tell us and we will say straight away whether it can be met.

What if he already owns a lot of knives? Buy a pattern rather than a size. A Laguiole folder, a chef knife or a karambit are the three that most collections are missing, and any of them is more interesting than a fourth bowie.
