Day to day: the knife you actually put in your pocket every morning. Parcels, food, cordage, the hundred small cuts a week that never make a story.

Why this one sells

Nothing about the Dugite is extreme. The blade is long enough to be useful and short enough to stay unobtrusive. The handle is wide enough to fill a hand without being a brick. Five ounces is noticeable but not annoying. Knives that do one thing brilliantly get admired on a shelf; knives that do nine things adequately are the ones that end up in a pocket every single morning. Read whether Damascus knives are worth it if you are still deciding whether pattern-welded steel is worth paying for on a working knife.

Figured wood, and what happens to it

Figure in wood is disrupted grain, and disrupted grain moves less predictably than straight grain. In practice that means the surface stays flat but the sheen changes as oils from your hand work in. Expect it to go from honey to a deeper amber over two or three years. Sunlight accelerates it unevenly, so if you leave the knife on a windowsill you will end up with a two-tone handle.

Where the 3.2 inches goes

Slightly longer than the standard three inch folder, which sounds trivial and is not. That extra fifth of an inch is what lets you cut a bagel or slice through a thick box in one stroke rather than two. It also pushes the knife past the legal carry limit in a handful of places where three inches happens to be the line drawn. Worth checking before you buy rather than after. Nothing spoils a knife faster than discovering you cannot legally carry it where you work.

Keeping the pattern: the etch that makes the layers visible is shallow. Abrasive cleaners, scouring pads and polishing compounds all remove it, permanently. Warm water, a soft cloth, and oil is the entire routine. Our Damascus care and sharpening page covers how to sharpen without flattening the pattern at the bevel. If you want the same materials in a fixed blade, the River Pearl D2 bull cutter is a working alternative with no moving parts.

FAQs

How stiff is the lock at first? Firm for the first week, then it settles. That is normal on a hand-fitted liner lock.

Is the leather pouch belt-mounted? It is a slip pouch, not a belt loop sheath.

Can two of these be ordered to match? Not exactly. The wood is selected from stock and no two pieces of figure are alike.
