Put it to work on: hard daily cutting where you want the knife on your belt line rather than loose in a pocket — site work, garden twine, feed sacks, packaging.

Eight ounces is a lot for a folder this size

Most seven inch folders land nearer five ounces. This one is eight, and the extra weight comes from the brass spine work and full liners rather than the blade. You get a knife that feels solid and does not flex, and a knife that pulls on a shirt pocket. Clip it to a belt or a jeans pocket seam, not to a light garment.

Padauk is the loudest wood we use

Fresh padauk is bright orange. Left in daylight it moves through red toward a deep russet brown over a year or two, and it will never go back. That is normal for the timber and not a defect. It is a hard, coarse-pored wood that resists dents better than walnut. Oil slows the color change but does not stop it. If you want the original tone to last, keep the knife in a drawer between jobs and away from a sunny window.

Where the knife is actually made

Every part of this folder is shaped on a bench rather than stamped, which is why the file-work is slightly different on each one and why the scales are matched to the pair of liners they sit on. Our page on hand forged against factory made explains what that does and does not buy you. If you would rather have a lighter knife in the same role, the Taipan clip folder is three ounces down.

Care: Wipe the blade dry, then dry the brass work with the corner of the cloth because water sits in the grooves. Brass dulls to a warm brown patina, which most owners leave alone; a metal polish will bring it back if you prefer bright. Oil the carbon blade monthly and keep the padauk out of the dishwasher and out of standing water. Our everyday carry buying notes cover the habits that keep a working folder alive.

FAQs

Can the pocket clip be moved? It is fixed on one side. If you carry left handed, look at a knife without a clip instead.

Will the orange handle stay orange? No. Expect a slow shift to deep red-brown. Keeping it in a drawer slows it down.

Is eight ounces too heavy to carry every day? It depends on your clothing. On a belt it disappears. In a jacket pocket you will feel it swing.

Will it fit a coin pocket? No. This is a main-pocket or belt knife, and eight ounces would drag on anything smaller. That is the trade you make for the brass and the full liners.

A Tennessee-made working folder, warranted for life against faults in materials or workmanship.
