The job it was made to do: opening an animal without opening what is inside it. The hook rides under the hide, catches, and unzips the belly in one pull while the point stays clear of the paunch. The straight edge ahead of the hook does the caping and the joint work afterward.
Why the hook is worth the trade
A gut hook saves you the slowest and riskiest minute of field dressing. It costs you something too. The hook is a small, curved edge in an awkward place, and it does not sharpen on a flat stone — you need a round file, a rod or a folded strip of abrasive. It also catches on the sheath mouth if you push the knife home carelessly. Living with a horn handle
Horn is keratin. It is the same stuff as a fingernail, and it behaves like one. It grips better when your hands are wet or bloody than any polished wood does. It also moves with humidity: leave it on a hot dashboard all summer or next to a wood stove all winter and horn can check, showing fine surface lines. Keep it out of extremes and it will outlast you. The turquoise inlay is softer than the horn around it, so treat that band as the vulnerable part.
Upkeep for this one: blood is acidic and Damascus is high-carbon, so rinse and dry the blade in the field rather than at home. Once a season, work a little food-safe wax or paste into the horn with your fingers; it feeds the keratin and takes the chalkiness off. Do not soak the handle, do not use solvent near the turquoise, and store the knife out of the leather rather than in it, because tanned leather holds moisture against steel.
Straight answers
Under six ounces — is that too light for field work? No. Weight helps a chopper. A dressing knife wants to be light, because you are steering it with your fingertips for twenty minutes at a time.
Will my handle match the photo? The materials will. The exact grain of the horn and the color of the turquoise will not, because they are natural and cut one at a time.
Can it be engraved? Yes, on the blade, before it ships. Add it at checkout.
