Description

Nineteen inches overall with fourteen of it blade, the Red Dragon is a bowie built at the scale the originals actually were. The steel is finished to a full mirror with no layering anywhere on the flat, and the guard is a double quillon that curls forward on one side and drops into a finger ring on the other.

Overall length 19 inches
Blade length 14 inches
Handle length 5 inches
Steel High carbon steel
Hardness 58–60 HRC, oil tempered
Handle Stabilized dye Amboyna wood with High Polish Luxury Steel Guard bolster and beautiful spacers
Included Hand-stitched leather sheath

What it is for: collecting, display and camp chopping, in roughly that order. A fourteen-inch blade is a machete-length tool with a knife’s edge geometry, and honestly most of these live on a wall. If yours goes to camp, it will clear brush and split kindling with more authority than any hatchet of the same weight.

The blade shape does three things at once

There is a long recurve through the belly, a raised clip toward the tip and a sharpened swedge running back along the false edge. The recurve concentrates force at the middle of the swing, which is what makes it chop. The clip drops the point below the line of the spine so it still stabs cleanly despite the length. The swedge takes weight off the tip so fourteen inches does not feel like a crowbar.

The guard is not decoration

A knife this long generates real momentum, and the finger ring on the lower quillon is there so your hand cannot travel forward onto the edge if the tip catches. The upper quillon sweeps toward the blade to catch and turn anything sliding down the spine. Both are polished from solid steel to match the fittings.

Red stabilized wood, steel and brass

The handle is dyed and stabilized wood in a deep red, set against the bright polish of the steel, fitted with polished spacers and a fluted metal butt cap at the end. The spacers are what stop a handle of this length from looking like a plain dowel, and they are stacked rather than machined as one piece.

Care: a mirror polish on a blade this large is mostly a storage problem rather than a use problem. Fingerprints etch into a polished surface over months, so wipe it down with a dry microfiber cloth every time you handle it and keep a light film of oil on it if it is displayed in a humid room. Do not store it flat against bare wood or inside the leather for long periods, and if you display it on a stand, keep the contact points padded so the finish is not worn through at two spots.

Questions about the Red Dragon

Does the blade have a Damascus pattern? No. This one is finished as a plain mirror-polished blade with no visible layering. The MH Red Dragon Slayer is the pattern-welded knife in the same family if that is what you are after.

Why a recurve instead of a straight edge? Chopping efficiency, at the cost of being harder to sharpen. Knife blade shapes explained covers the trade-offs.

Was this really made by hand? Yes, forged and finished by a smith rather than stamped. Hand-forged versus factory made sets out what the difference actually amounts to.
