How burl wood behaves over time
Burl is the swirled growth from a knot or a burr on the tree, which is why the figure runs in circles instead of straight lines. It is also why it is unpredictable: stabilized resin fills the voids, but the density varies across a single scale. In practice a burl handle darkens with skin oil, takes a deeper shine on the high spots where your fingers sit, and shows dents where a synthetic scale would shrug them off. Most owners consider that an improvement. If you want a handle that stays exactly as it arrived, wood is the wrong material.
What the pearl bolster is doing there
The bolster is the collar at the pivot end. Shell there is a decorative choice, not a structural one, and it is the part of this knife most likely to chip if you drop it on a hard floor.
