How burl wood behaves over time
Burl is the swirled growth from a knot or a burr on the tree, which is why the figure runs in circles instead of straight lines. It is also why it is unpredictable: stabilized resin fills the voids, but the density varies across a single scale. In practice a burl handle darkens with skin oil, takes a deeper shine on the high spots where your fingers sit, and shows dents where a synthetic scale would shrug them off. What the pearl bolster is doing there
