Intended for: hunting and general field work where you want reach at the point. Eight inches overall, four of it blade, and under five ounces on the belt.
The blade shape
This is a clip point: the spine drops away in a long concave sweep over the last third, which drops the tip down toward the centerline of the blade. Two things come out of that. The point sits low and forward, so you can start a cut precisely and see what you are doing, and there is a long straight edge behind it for everything else. What you give up is spine thickness right at the tip, so it is a knife for cutting and not for prying. The knife anatomy guide names the parts if any of that is unfamiliar.
Horn scales
The handle scales are natural horn, and the photograph shows why people choose it: light passes into the material, so the color runs from cream through amber and no two panels are the same. Horn is warm to hold in cold weather in a way steel and G10 are not. It is also a natural material that moves with humidity, so the scales are pinned rather than glued alone, and the fit at the bolster is done by hand after the pins are set. Horn takes a polish that deepens with handling instead of wearing off, which means the scales generally look better after a season of use than they did in the box.
The sheath
Included is a hand-stitched leather sheath with a tooled border and a contrast welt. Leather sheaths are made to fit one knife, which is why this one holds without a strap. The raised welt along the mouth is not decoration either: it holds the two faces apart so the edge cannot saw through the stitching from the inside. Use it for carrying and not for storage — see the care note below. At 4.9 ounces the whole thing rides comfortably. Within the Ultra Line series, the UL-21 Black Bear is shorter at 3.5 inches and the UL-23 Koala is smaller again.
Care: wash the blade in warm soapy water after use, dry it completely, and put it away dry — pay attention to the seam where the scales meet the bolster, because that is where water hides. Store the knife outside the leather sheath rather than in it, since leather traps moisture against metal. For the horn: keep it out of prolonged soaking and away from dry heat, and give it a little paste wax now and then to stop it drying and going chalky at the edges.
