Description

The Magnum pairs a Wind & Mix twist Fire pattern blade with real working geometry — built to be used, striking enough to be displayed. It is our reading of the French Laguiole: a slim folding knife that has spent two centuries earning its keep in a shepherd’s pocket and beside a plate of steak, rendered here in forged pattern-welded steel instead of stamped stock.

What the pattern actually is

Bars of 1095 and 15N20 are forge-welded into a billet, drawn out, twisted, folded and welded again, then ground flat and bathed in acid. The two steels darken at different rates, so the swirl you see is the real internal structure of the bar rather than a finish laid on the surface. That is why no two Magnum blades carry the same figure, and why the arithmetic behind 352 layers matters: the count doubles with every fold.

1095 comes to a keen edge on an ordinary stone. The 15N20 carries nickel, shrugs off the etchant and supplies the bright silver bands. Oil tempering settles the pair at a working hardness that favors sharpenability over stubbornness, so this is a pocket knife you touch up on a ceramic rod rather than send away.

In the hand

The handle is a deep red-brown figured hardwood, sanded through fine grits and left with a low satin sheen so the grain stays visible. Brass pins are set through the scales in the traditional cross arrangement, and a filed brass spring runs the length of the spine with hand-cut file-work along its edge. Where the spring meets the bolster sits the small flat tab French makers call the bee; on this model it is left plain rather than sculpted. Brass caps both ends. Under three ounces, it disappears in a trouser pocket, and the narrow, slightly upswept blade slices a ribeye as willingly as it opens the mail — slim, elegant lines and no wasted metal, which is the whole case for a French knife at the table.

Sheath and upkeep

A hand-stitched leather pouch comes with it, dyed black, tooled with a repeating diamond stamp and sized to ride on a belt. Treat it as a carrier rather than a cupboard, since leather draws moisture. High-carbon Damascus is not stainless and does not pretend to be: dry the blade as soon as it has met citrus, salt or a wet board, and put a thin film of food-safe oil on it whenever the etch looks thirsty. A little gray haze over the years is normal and, honestly, welcome. Our Damascus knife care notes go further into rust spots and sharpening angles.

FAQs

Is this real Damascus steel? Yes. The blade is pattern-welded from 1095 and 15N20, forged by hand and etched in acid so the layers show. Hold it to a raking light and you can feel the bands under a fingernail.

Is it a folder or a fixed blade? A folder. The blade pivots on a pinned brass bolster and is held open by the filed backspring, in the classic French pattern.

What arrives in the box? The Magnum, its leather pouch, and packaging you can hand over without rewrapping.

Can it be engraved? Yes — laser engraving is a paid add-on you select before checkout, for initials, a date or a short message.

Make it a gift: add laser engraving at checkout. Every order is finished and shipped from Memphis, TN with a lifetime warranty, backed by 2,000+ verified customer reviews.
