In the hand: this is the middle of the range and probably the most generally useful folder we make. Four inches of blade, 8.5 oz, a clip so it stays where you put it, and a handle material that does not care about weather. Nothing on it is precious.
Micarta, specifically
Micarta is layers of fabric soaked in resin and cured under pressure. It is dimensionally stable, so it never swells or shrinks with humidity, and it gets slightly grippier when wet because the cloth texture comes through as the resin surface wears. That is the opposite of what most handle materials do, and it is why Micarta ended up on so many working knives.
Reading the pattern
The figure on this blade is concentric — rings and eyes rather than straight banding. That comes from how the billet was manipulated before grinding: drilling or punching into the stack and then flattening it forces the layers to loop around the disturbance. The result is different on every knife and cannot be planned exactly.
Balance and the clip
At 8.5 oz across 8.9 inches open, the balance sits close to the pivot, which keeps the tip feeling light and controllable rather than nose-heavy. Clipped in a pocket, most of that weight is above the fabric line, so it hangs quietly instead of dragging.
Four inches, closed at four and a half
This is the size class most people settle on after owning something smaller and something larger. Long enough to break down a box or process food properly, short enough that you are not thinking about it in a front pocket.
Sharpening a pattern-welded edge
Nothing special is required. The two steels in the billet are close enough in hardness that they abrade at the same rate, so a standard whetstone progression works exactly as it would on a single-steel blade. What changes is the look: fresh grinding brightens the etched contrast along the bevel.
What the clip is for
Tip-up carry, so the opening end sits under your thumb as you draw it out.
Care: dry the blade before you fold it — this is high-carbon steel and the pivot is where water hides. A monthly drop of oil in the joint and a wipe along the blade is the entire routine. Micarta needs soap and water and nothing more. Detail in our Damascus care and sharpening guide.
FAQs
Will it develop a patina? It can, if you cut acidic food or leave it damp. A patina is stable oxide and is not rust; many owners encourage it.
