Where the fire pattern comes from
Twisting a welded billet before it is drawn out is what turns straight layers into the pooled, ringed figure you see across this blade. Each twist forces the bands to cut through the surface at an angle, so grinding the bevel exposes concentric eyes instead of parallel stripes — that swirling look is the reason the pattern carries the name it does. It cannot be faked with a stencil, and it cannot be planned exactly; the smith sets the conditions and the steel decides the rest. Brass file-work and stag
Look at the fittings and you will see why this one takes so long. The bolster, the mid-spacer and the butt cap are brass, each cut and filed by hand into an open scrolled band rather than left as a plain collar. Between them sits amber and ivory crown stag, hard and irregular and full of character. Brass darkens with handling, so the fittings will gradually shift toward a warmer, older tone against the antler — collectors generally consider that an improvement.
