Built for: hunters tired of carrying more knife than the job needs. Four and a half inches of handle against three and a half of blade means your hand is fully on the tool with room to spare, which is what you want when you are working cold and wet.
Where a short blade wins and where it loses
Wins: caping, skinning, anything where the cut has to stop exactly where you decide. Short blades track better because there is less steel behind the point to wander. Loses: splitting a rib cage, reaching into a deep body cavity, or any chopping at all. This is a detail knife. If you head out expecting one blade to do everything, you will want something longer alongside it, and an axe covers what a knife this size never will. What engraving does to maintenance
Engraved surfaces trap what smooth ones shed. Blood, salt and solvent all settle into the cut lines, and a paper towel dragged across the flat will not lift them. Use a soft toothbrush. Thirty extra seconds is the difference between engraving that stays crisp and engraving that goes brown at the margins after three seasons.
Honest about the balance
We do not publish a weight for this model, so we will not describe how it swings as though we had measured it. What the numbers do tell you is the proportion: a handle longer than the blade puts the balance behind your fingers, which suits controlled cuts over chopping. If exact ounces matter to your carry setup, ask us before you order rather than guessing from photographs.
Care: 440C carries enough chromium to shrug off a damp day, so this is a low-anxiety steel. Rinse it, dry it, put it away. The engraved detail and the leather are what need thought. Brush out the cut lines after field use, and keep the knife stored outside the sheath: leather is tanned with acids and holds humidity, and steel left inside one for months will pit under the guard where you cannot watch it happen. Give the sheath itself a wipe of conditioner once a year.
FAQs
Will 440C hold up through more than one animal in a day? Yes, with a few passes on a strop between them. It is not a super steel and it will slow down. It also comes back quickly, which is the trade most hunters prefer. Our hunting knife guide goes into where that trade matters.

Will the finish stay this bright? No, and it should not. The flats pick up fine scratches from the sheath and from use. The engraving holds up better than the surrounding steel, because cut edges catch light however scuffed the flats become.
