Description

A twelve inch fighting-pattern blade with a copper-clad Damascus face, a steel guard and a fullered spine. Nothing else we forge announces itself this loudly, and it makes no apology for that.

Overall length 12 inches
Blade length 7 inches
Handle length 5 inches
Steel 1095 + 15N20 Damascus
Hardness 58–60 HRC, oil tempered
Handle Exotic Burl Wood
Included Hand-stitched leather sheath

Where it belongs: on a wall, a desk or a display shelf. Seven inches of double-guarded blade is a collector’s proportion rather than a field one, and the burl handle is finished to be seen from across a room.

The copper is part of the billet

The bright metal running through the pattern is copper forge-welded into the stack, not plating. Because copper is softer than either steel in the mix, it moves differently under the hammer, which is why it pools into wide islands instead of following the layer lines. It also means the surface will patina over time. Left alone it goes dark brown; polished, it comes straight back.

Fuller, guard, and what they are for

The groove down the flat is a fuller. It removes weight from the middle of the blade without reducing the depth of the spine, so the knife keeps its stiffness and loses some heft. The steel guard sits between the handle and the edge and stops a hand sliding forward on a thrust. Both features come out of the military dagger tradition, which we trace in the KA-BAR pattern guide and knife versus dagger.

Burl handle, ringed grip

Burl is the swirled growth from a trunk deformity rather than straight trunk timber, which is why no two handles carry the same figure. Shallow rings are turned into the grip so a wet hand still finds purchase on a rounded profile. For a plainer take on the same silhouette, the stacked leather military dagger uses a traditional washer handle instead.

Twelve inches, and where that puts it

Seven inches of blade on a five inch handle is a blade-forward layout, so the weight sits ahead of the guard and the knife wants to swing rather than sit still. That is deliberate on a fighting pattern and it is exactly why the proportion does not suit field dressing. Judge it as a display and collection piece and it makes complete sense.

Care: this one is mostly a display piece, so the enemy is humidity rather than use. Keep it out of a bathroom, off an exterior wall, and out of the sheath. A wipe of mineral oil twice a year is enough for the steel. Wax the burl once a year if the room runs dry, or the wood will check along the rings.

FAQs

Is the copper going to wear off? No. It is welded through the thickness of the billet, so grinding or sharpening exposes more of it rather than removing it.

Is it sharp? Yes, both edges are finished sharp. It is a display knife by proportion, not by finish.

Can I get a name on it? Yes. Add hand engraving for $29 during checkout; the fuller gives a clean flat to lay text into.

Not going to lie. This exceeded my expectations by a lot. Even the small details in the damascus pattern are crisp and clean. Handle has a great grip even with wet or gloved hands. Black Mamba Knives’ attention to detail is honestly unmatched. Steel has a gorgeous pattern that looks different in every light. Great buy overall.

Nice piece for the price. Balance is good, just wish the handle had a bit more grip texture. Would still tell others to give this a try.
