Description

The raindrop pattern on this blade was forged into it, not printed on top of it. Concentric rings pool along the flat and stretch out as they run toward the tip, and the hammered texture near the spine catches light differently than the etched valleys below it.

Who carries this: someone who wants a dress folder that still cuts. At 3.5 inches of blade and 7.5 inches open it opens mail, breaks down boxes and trims a stubborn thread, but it is honestly a knife you pull out because you like looking at it.

Two natural materials in one handle

The scales are sea shell, banded with a strip of turquoise held between brass frames. Neither material is dyed. The shell shifts from cream to pale gold depending on the angle you hold it, and the turquoise carries the dark spiderweb matrix that natural stone always does. That matrix is not a flaw. It is how you tell the stone from resin.

Brass, and why it goes dull

The bolsters, frames and pins are brass. Brass darkens with handling, and on a knife carried in a pocket it will go from bright yellow to a warm amber inside a few months. Some buyers polish it back. Most leave it. Either answer is correct, but decide before you reach for metal polish, because polish that wanders onto the shell will scratch it.

What it ships in

A hand-stitched black leather belt pouch with a flap closure, sized to this knife rather than bought off a rack. It rides vertically on a belt and swallows the whole knife.

Care: the three materials here want different things, so keep it simple and treat the whole knife as if the shell were the fragile part, because it is. Wipe it with a dry cloth. Keep solvents, acetone and ultrasonic cleaners away from the shell and the turquoise entirely. If the blade needs a wipe after damp handling, use a rag with a trace of oil on the steel only, and never store it shut inside the leather pouch for months at a time.

Questions buyers ask about this folder

Can the turquoise band chip? Yes, if you drop it on concrete. Stone is stone. Normal pocket carry will not hurt it, and the brass frames on either side sit slightly proud to take a knock first.

Will my shell match the photograph? The pattern will not. Shell is cut from a natural blank, so the swirl and the depth of the gold flashes differ on every one. The layout of the turquoise band and the brass will be the same.

How do I get lint out of the pivot? Compressed air or a toothpick, then the smallest amount of thin oil at the pivot. Full instructions are in our guide to cleaning a pocket knife. If you want to confirm the blade pattern is forged rather than surface printed, our guide on spotting real Damascus shows what to look for at the edge bevel.
