Right for: small hands, light packs, and anyone who has learned that a 3.5 inch blade does most of what a six-inch blade does with far less bulk on the belt.

What a short blade is good at

Three and a half inches of drop point is the classic size for caping and skinning, because the point stays close to your fingertips and you can feel what the edge is doing through the hide. It is also enough knife for camp food, cordage and general cutting. What you give up is reach. Splitting a pelvis or working deep in a chest cavity wants more blade, and this is not that knife.

Four point nine ounces

Weight decides whether a knife gets carried or left in a drawer. At 4.9 oz with the sheath on a belt, you stop noticing it inside an hour. The balance sits right at the forward bolster, which is why it feels neutral in a pinch grip. If you have small hands, look at our notes on knives for smaller hands: the scalloped scales here index a short palm properly instead of leaving your little finger hanging off the end.

Bone scales over the years

Bone is hard, light and takes a polish, and it yellows very slightly with handling, which most owners like. It is more brittle than wood. Dropped edge-on onto tile it can chip at a scallop, and heat is its enemy: a closed car in July will shrink bone and can open a seam at the pins. Store it indoors at room temperature and it will outlive you.

Care: the blade is stainless, so it asks for no oil and grows no patina. Wash it, dry it, done. Give the engraved bolsters a brush rather than a wipe so grit does not pack into the scroll. The black leather sheath is snap-fastened; keep the knife out of it between trips, because leather is tanned with salts that sit against steel.

Buyer questions

Is it full tang? The scales are pinned to a tang that runs the length of the handle, capped at the butt by the engraved pommel.

Is it big enough to field dress a deer? Yes, comfortably, and our skinning knife guide explains why smaller blades are usually faster at it.

What if I want something much larger? The Damascus bowie with stag sits at the opposite end of the range.
