Built to: open and skin game without cutting into what is underneath. Short blade, deep curve, no wasted length past the tip.

Three inches, ten ounces

The numbers look strange until you hold one. Three inches of blade on a 6.5 inch knife means most of the length is handle, and ten ounces on a knife that small means the mass is concentrated where your hand is. Both are on purpose. A skinner is used with short controlled strokes and a lot of wrist, and a heavy handle behind a short blade gives you that control. It also means the knife does not feel like it wants to run away from you when your hands are cold and slick. Our skinning knife guide explains what belly geometry buys you.

The handle stack

Front to back: a black horn section against the blade, then a turquoise band set between thin brass liners, then a wood section, closed off with a polished steel pommel that carries a lanyard hole. Two mosaic pins run through. Every one of those layers is a separate piece cut, faced and glued flat before the handle is shaped, which is why the seams read as lines rather than gaps.

Field care

Blood and stomach contents are both acidic and both will mark this blade if you leave them. Wipe it on a rag before you sheath it in the field, and give it a proper wash the same day. The lanyard hole through the pommel is worth using — a cord loop around your wrist is the cheapest insurance against dropping a wet knife into leaf litter. Grit is the other thing to watch. Sand and dried blood work their way into the seams between handle layers, and the fix is a soft toothbrush and warm water rather than picking at the joints with a tip. For a longer skinner with more belly, compare the Silver Boa Snake; for a similar turquoise handle at 4 inches, see the Turquoise Sea.

Care: high-carbon Damascus rusts if it is stored damp. Wash, dry, and lay down a light coat of mineral oil before it goes in a drawer. Store it out of the leather sheath — vegetable tanned leather holds moisture and its tannins will spot bare steel over a season. The horn and turquoise sections want nothing but a dry wipe; skip solvents, which dull horn, and keep the wood section lightly oiled once or twice a year.

FAQs

Is the turquoise real stone? It is a natural turquoise inlay set between brass liners, so color and veining vary piece to piece.

Is three inches enough for deer? Yes. Skinning is a short-stroke job and a shorter blade is easier to keep off the hide.

Is a sheath supplied? Yes, hand-stitched leather, shaped to this knife.
