Description
The Raven Spike is the one with a point on the back. Where most of our hawks carry a flat hammer poll, this head is drawn out into a tapered piercing spike — the old boarding-axe and trade-hawk pattern, and still the most useful thing you can put opposite a cutting edge. The head is left with the forge texture on the flats and polished only where it matters, along the bevel. Nineteen inches of straight American oak underneath.

Built for: camp work where you need to do more than chop. The bit splits kindling and limbs branches; the spike breaks ice, punches through bark and frozen ground, sets an anchor point when you are climbing over deadfall, and pries where a flat poll only bounces. It is the multi-tool end of a very old design.
On the forge finish: the flats keep the hammer texture from the forge because it is honest and because a rough surface holds oil better than a polished one. The bevel is ground and polished for cutting. Each head is worked by hand, so texture and outline vary a little piece to piece.
Care: high carbon steel rusts if you leave it wet. Wipe the head dry after use, keep a light film of mineral oil on it, and store it somewhere dry. A grey-brown patina will build over time — leave it, it protects the steel. Oil the oak once or twice a year. Check the head for tightness before every session; wood moves with the seasons, and a loose head on any axe is dangerous.
FAQs
What is a spike poll for? Breaching, prying, breaking ice, punching holes, and setting a purchase point in wood or frozen ground. Historically it is the boarding-axe and trade-hawk pattern. Practically, it turns a chopping tool into something you can also pull, pierce and lever with.
Is the spike safe to carry? The sheath covers the bit. Treat the spike with the same respect you would any point — carry it head-down in a pack, never loose.
Can it be thrown? Yes. The balance is right for it, and the forge finish will not look worse for the marks. Never throw a spiked hawk where anyone is downrange or beside the target.
Is a sheath included? Yes — a fitted leather edge sheath comes with every tomahawk we build.
