Why three inches is the right blade
Longer folders photograph better and live worse. Three inches clears a pocket cleanly, opens without needing room to swing, and covers everything short of food prep and field dressing. It is also the length that keeps you the right side of the rules in most American cities, which is worth checking for yourself because carry law is local. Go much above four inches and you are carrying something you will leave at home half the time, and that is how good knives end up in drawers.
What the grind is good and bad at
A drawn-out point and a shallow grind make this a slicer. It goes through tape, hide, rope and cardboard with less force than a thick tactical grind needs. The same geometry is why you should not use it as a screwdriver or a pry bar, because thin tips break and no warranty covers a knife used as a lever. Day-to-day maintenance
Care: this is a high-carbon folder, so the pivot needs as much attention as the edge. Dry the blade after anything wet or acidic and give the flats a wipe of light oil every few weeks. Once a season, open it, drip oil into the pivot, work it fifty times and wipe the excess away, because grit in a joint wears washers far faster than cutting wears an edge. A gray patina builds across the blade over months, which is normal and slows further corrosion. Orange, rough rust is not normal, and it means the knife went away damp.
FAQs
Does it hold an edge as well as stainless? At the hardness listed above it holds well and, more usefully, it comes back fast on a stone. High-carbon steel is easier to sharpen than most modern stainless alloys, and the trade is that it needs drying.
Is it heavy for a pocket? No. At this size it disappears in a jeans pocket. If you want something lighter still with no rust worry at all, a titanium pocket knife trades away the forged pattern to get it.
First knife, or one for somebody who already carries? Either. How to choose an EDC knife is a good half hour before you commit.
