Purpose: display, collection, and the narrow band of outdoor work that needs a blade longer than your forearm. Nobody hunts with this. It gets bought because it is impressive, and it is honest to say so.

Fourteen inches of edge on a five-inch handle

That is a long lever on a short grip, and it is worth understanding before you swing it. Most of the mass sits well out in front of your hand, so the blade has real chopping authority and very little precision. Your wrist absorbs the shock of every impact. Keep your body clear of the follow-through arc and do not expect control near the tip. For anything needing a light touch you want a second knife entirely. A 4.2-ounce karambit sits at the opposite end of the same catalog.

Who should skip this one

Skip it if you want a knife to take on a plane, into a city, or on a hunt where every ounce is counted. Skip it if this is your first forged Damascus piece and you intend to use it, because a fourteen-inch blade forgives nothing and is expensive to re-grind if you chip it. If you already know you want a large bowie, this is one of the largest we make and the burl is genuinely good material. Are Damascus knives worth it lays out the case both ways.

Amboyna burl, stabilized and dyed

Burl is the growth on a trunk where the grain runs in every direction at once. It moves unpredictably, so it gets stabilized: resin driven in under vacuum until the wood is effectively plastic. Stabilized burl does not swell, crack or take on water, and the dye goes in with the resin rather than sitting on the surface. Years of direct sunlight will still lift the color, so display it away from a window.

Long-term care: a blade with this much surface area shows every mark. Handle it with clean dry hands or a cloth, because the salt in a fingerprint etches a visible outline into polished carbon steel within a week. Wipe it down after each handling and keep a light film of oil on the flats between times. An open rack beats a closed case, and both beat the leather sheath, which traps humidity against the steel. Proper knife storage is worth reading before you hang this anywhere.

What owners ask

Is this a sword? No. It is a bowie-profile knife with a fourteen-inch blade. It has no sword geometry and should not be used for cutting drills.

Can it be sharpened on a normal stone? Yes, but it takes patience: fourteen inches is a lot of edge to hold at one angle. Work in sections and mark the bevel with a pen to see where metal is coming off.
