Description

A stag horn handle stained amber, a sculpted guard with a finger ring, and a long clip-point blade carrying a bold ladder pattern through the forged steel. This is the showpiece end of the range.

Steel 1095 + 15N20 Damascus, 352 layers
Hardness 58–60 HRC, oil tempered
Handle –Stag Horn
Included Hand-stitched leather sheath

Best at: being looked at, and cutting well when you do use it. The finger ring and swept guard lock your hand in place, which is genuinely useful on a big blade, and equally makes the knife slower to get in and out of a sheath.

Care: pattern-welded 1095 and 15N20 at 58 to 60 HRC will take a fine edge and will also rust in a week of neglect. Dry it after every use, including after handling it with bare hands, because skin oil is acidic enough to leave prints etched into an etched blade. Stag horn is stable and needs nothing, but it can crack if it goes from a cold truck into a hot room repeatedly. The two-tone sheath is vegetable-tanned leather and will darken with handling.

What the guard and finger ring change

A closed finger ring is a commitment. It means your hand cannot slide forward onto the edge under any circumstances, which on a knife this size is a real safety gain when you are pushing hard. It also means only one grip is available. You cannot choke up, you cannot reverse it comfortably, and you cannot pass it to someone with much larger or smaller hands and expect it to fit. Try that shape before assuming you like it.

What this listing does not tell you

The specification for this model does not publish an overall length, a blade length or a weight, and inventing those figures for you would be worse than admitting it. What the photographs show is a substantial full-size bowie with a blade considerably longer than the handle. If exact dimensions matter to your purchase, ask before ordering rather than after.

Where the money goes

Most of the cost here is in the forging, the sculpted guard and the fitted stag, not in the cutting performance. A blade at this hardness cuts beautifully, but so does a much plainer one. What real Damascus costs and why sets out the difference between a decorated knife and an expensive one. If you want the forged steel and the working shape without the sculpture, a plainer Damascus bowie covers the same ground for a fraction of this.

Questions worth asking

Is the stag horn dyed? The amber tone is a stain over natural antler. The ridges and pits underneath are the real texture of the material and vary piece to piece.

Can I use it for hunting? You can, and it will work. Consider whether you want to put field wear on a knife at this price first.

How do I keep the etch dark? Do not polish the flats. Wipe along the blade, never scrub across it, and use oil rather than any abrasive metal cleaner. The care routine for forged blades goes into the detail.
