Description
Onyx Crane is a katana built the way the fittings are supposed to go together, not the way a wall-hanger approximates them. A 28-inch Damascus blade with a proper curve, polished bright so the pattern runs as a wave down the length rather than sitting flat on it. Under the wrap is genuine white rayskin — the nubbed panel that gives the ito something to bite into so the wrap does not creep. Over it, black silk ito in the traditional alternating diamond. A blackened iron tsuba, round and plain, and a brass habaki collaring the blade at the base.

Built for: display and collection, and built properly enough that it would not embarrass itself if it were ever cut with. The curve, the balance point and the length are all in the range a real katana lives in — this is not a decorative casting with a katana silhouette.
On the fittings: rayskin and silk ito are the two things cheap katanas skip first, because both are fiddly and both are hidden under each other. Rayskin is what stops the wrap sliding; silk is what stops it going slick in the hand. Getting the diamond spacing even down a 10-inch tsuka is slow work and it is the first thing anyone who knows katanas looks at.
On the Damascus: pattern-welded and hand-forged, so every blade carries its own figure. Yours will not match the photograph exactly.
Care: Damascus is high carbon steel and it rusts. Wipe the blade after every handling — fingerprints are acidic and a katana blade is almost all surface. Keep a light coat of mineral or choji oil on it. Store the sword horizontally, edge up, and out of the scabbard for long storage. Keep the silk dry.
