Description

The BMK-003 tri fold puts three mirror-finished Damascus blades into a stabilized handle. Stabilized means the wood was vacuum-impregnated with resin before shaping, so what looks like a natural scale behaves more like a polymer once it is on the knife.

Overall length 8.3 inches
Blade length 4 inches
Handle length 4.3 inches
Steel 1095 + 15N20 Damascus, 352 layers
Hardness 58–60 HRC, oil tempered
Handle stabilized
Pattern Mirror shine Blade, Extreme custom File-work
Included Hand-stitched leather sheath

What stabilizing does to a handle

Untreated wood on a pocket knife moves. It takes up moisture from your hand and the air, swells fractionally, and over years it can shrink back and leave the bolsters proud or the blades tight in the channel. Stabilizing fills the cell structure with resin under vacuum and cures it hard, so the result does not swell, does not need oiling and does not crack in dry heat. What it gives up is the way bare wood ages. A stabilized scale looks much the same in ten years as it does today. Some buyers want exactly that. Others find it lifeless next to bone or horn.

Living with a mirror finish

A mirror polish is the hardest finish to keep and the most impressive when it is kept. It shows every fingerprint and every fine scratch, and the cut work along the spines gives lint somewhere to gather. Carry it daily and never wipe it and it will look tired within a month. Wipe it down each time you close it and it stays remarkable for years. That is the whole deal, and it is better known before you buy than after.

Built for: the pocket that also holds a handkerchief. Someone who enjoys maintaining a knife as much as using it, and who wants three edges available for three different jobs.

Maintenance, split two ways

Care: the resin-filled handle needs nothing more than soap and a damp cloth, which makes it the lowest-maintenance handle in the range. The blades are the opposite. High-carbon steel under a mirror polish shows corrosion the instant it starts, so dry each blade fully and keep a light oil film on all three. Never leave it closed and wet, because water wicks into the backsprings and works its way outward for weeks. Use a toothbrush and a dry cloth in the file-work, and put a drop of oil on each pivot twice a year with the blades fully open. Honing vs sharpening is worth reading before you take a stone to a mirror blade, because most of the time a hone is all you need.

FAQs

How do I keep the polish from hazing? Avoid abrasive cloths entirely. A clean cotton rag and light oil, worked along the blade rather than across it.

Three blades, do I sharpen them the same? No. Keep the main blade at a fine slicing edge and let the others carry a slightly more robust one for rough work.

Does the handle need oiling like wood? No. The resin has already filled it, so oil sits on the surface and collects dust.

Is there a single-blade alternative? Plenty. For kitchen and fish work a Damascus fillet knife is a better tool than any pocket pattern, and multi blade pocket knives compares the traditional layouts.
