Where this blade shape earns its keep
The clip point gives you a thin, controllable tip for the careful part of field dressing, and the belly behind it does the long pulling cuts. That combination is why the bowie pattern survived. Where it struggles is fine carving: the guard sits close, so choking right up onto the ricasso is not comfortable for extended detail work.
Built for: field dressing, camp cooking, cutting cordage and light brush. It is also filed under bull cutter patterns here, which tells you it handles the long, drawing cuts that job needs.
Balance and the five-inch handle
A five-inch handle against a four and a half inch blade puts the balance point behind your index finger. That makes it feel lighter than the stated weight and gives you good control on the pull. It also means it is a poor chopper. If you want something that bites into wood, you want length and forward weight, not this. Compare it against a Damascus pocket clip folder if what you actually need is something to carry in town.
Care: pattern-welded 1095 and 15N20 is high carbon through and through. Blood and salt will spot it within hours, so carry a rag. After a hunt, wash with plain water, dry completely, then oil. The etch that shows the pattern is a surface effect and it will fade where you sharpen and where your thumb rides; that is normal and it can be re-etched. Keep it out of the sheath in storage so trapped moisture does not sit on the steel.
FAQs
Is the tip strong enough to pry? No. A clip point is thin by design. Prying is how people snap tips off good knives.
How does it compare to the larger bowies? Lighter, more controllable, less capable in wood. It is the size most hunters end up preferring after they have carried something bigger for a season.
Can it be re-profiled to a different edge angle? Yes. The steel takes a thinner grind well. Fixed blade bevels explained covers the trade-offs before you commit.
Is it a skinner? It works as one, though a dedicated shape is better. The skinning knife guide sets out the difference.

Exceptional quality, made in the USA, and great customer service. There was a small snag in the processing of my order, but an inquiry to customer service had me speaking to Mark (the owner) and he sorted things out quickly and made a loyal customer out of me. I would recommend Black Mamba and will DEFINITELY buy from them again!

Great everyday knife. The sheath needs redesigned to secure the knife by the handle.
Update.
June 17, 2023 I was using it camping and it has broken at the handle. Terrible craftsmanship. The tang is too small for a hunting /Bowie knife. It’s only 3/16 inch/4.75 mm. Don’t buy it.
