Intended use: daily carry that you do not think about. A 4.5 inch blade folding into an 8.5 inch package is a lot of knife for a pocket, but the geometry is honest — straight spine, a sharply angled tip, a long flat grind. It opens boxes, trims rope, breaks down a camp meal, and gets put away without ceremony.
Why VG10
VG10 is a Japanese stainless alloy built around vanadium and a high chromium content. It is not the hardest steel available and it is not the toughest, and neither of those is the reason people keep buying it. What VG10 does exceptionally well is take a very fine edge quickly and then resist the corrosion that punishes a carbon blade in a sweaty pocket. For an owner who wants to sharpen on a Sunday and forget about the knife all week, that combination is hard to beat.
The mirror finish
A mirror polish is not just cosmetic. Polishing removes the microscopic peaks that give moisture somewhere to sit, so a bright blade sheds water and resists staining better than a bead-blasted one. The cost is that every fingerprint shows and fine scratches are obvious under angled light. If you want a knife that stays looking new without effort, buy a satin finish. If you want the surface that actually performs best against corrosion, this is it.
Micarta and the filework
Micarta is linen or canvas set in resin, then ground to shape. It is dense, it grips harder as your hands get wet, and unlike wood it never swells or splits. The black scales here are finished smooth rather than textured. Along the top of the handle the maker has cut a run of filework, small notched arcs that catch the light and give a thumb something to register against when you choke up on the knife.
Care. This is a low-maintenance knife by design. Wash the blade, dry it, and skip the oil unless it is going into long storage, because stainless does not need it and oil in a folder’s action just collects grit. Micarta cleans with soap and water and can be scrubbed without harm. Keep the pivot free of pocket lint. When the mirror finish gets marked, a metal polish and a soft cloth will bring it back, which is not true of an etched or coated blade.
Common questions
How does VG10 compare with D2 or 440C? The trade-offs are set out in our steel comparison guide.
Is this too much knife for everyday carry? Depends on your pocket and your state. See how to choose an EDC knife.
Is there a dressier version in the same steel? The VG10 folder with rosewood and pearl shell swaps micarta for natural materials.
