Where it earns its keep: larger game, heavier camp work, and anyone who wants one fixed blade to cover both. Five inches of edge splits a ribcage without the awkward sawing motion a short knife forces on you.
The clip point, honestly
That swept clip puts the tip low and gives you a fine point for opening hide. It also removes steel from exactly where a prying knife needs it, so treat the last inch as a scalpel and never a lever. Compare the profile against the alternatives in our breakdown of knife blade shapes. If a heavy-duty modern shape suits you better, the Jade Warden D2 tracker is built for chopping and scraping rather than fine point work.
A stacked handle ages differently
Antler, buffalo horn and walnut all move at their own rate with humidity. That is why the spacers are thin and the fit is tight. Expect faint seam lines to become visible after a couple of seasons. That is normal for stacked construction and not a fault. Horn takes the deepest polish of the three and will pick up a gloss just from being handled. Antler goes the other way and grows duller and warmer in tone. None of that needs correcting, and trying to correct it with sandpaper is how good handles get ruined.
Nine ounces at ten inches
The balance point sits right at the Damascus bolster, which is unusual for a knife this long. It means the blade does not run away from you on a draw cut. It also means the Scorpion feels heavier than a nine-ounce number suggests, because none of that weight is helping you chop. Buy it for control, not for batoning. A hunter coming off a lightweight factory blade will find the first hour tiring and every hour after that fine.
Upkeep: the raindrop pattern is etched into the surface. Steel wool and abrasive pastes will scour it flat, so clean with hot water and a cloth only. Oil the blade after contact with blood or brine. Wax rather than oil suits the horn and walnut, since oil eventually darkens walnut unevenly. Our Damascus hunting knife guide goes deeper on field maintenance.
FAQs
How thick is the spine? The table above lists overall length, blade length, handle length and weight. A stock thickness is not among them, and rather than estimate one we have left it out.
Is the guard functional or decorative? Functional. It stops a wet hand sliding forward onto the edge under a hard thrust.
Can I carry it in a truck? Fixed-blade carry rules vary by state and by vehicle. Check your own before you travel with it.
