Works best: as a small belt knife for close work. Six inches overall means the whole knife is in your hand, and three inches of plain edge covers camp cutting, light game work and the general jobs a fixed blade gets picked up for.

Care: the stone is the part to think about. Turquoise is soft and set into the handle rather than laid on it, and it dislikes solvents, heat and being knocked against rock. Wipe the handle with a damp cloth rather than running it under a hot tap. High carbon steel, so dry the blade, keep it out of the black sheath between uses, and it stays clean with no routine at all. The mosaic pins sit flush and will take a slight polish from years of handling, which is the only change you should expect from them.

Three inches on a fixed blade is not three inches on a folder

There is no pivot to loosen, no lock to fail and no gap for anything to collect in. The whole of the six inch length is solid, so you can bear down on this in a way you would never bear down on a folder of the same blade length. The trade is that it needs a sheath, it has no closed state, and it is not something you slip into a pocket. That is the entire argument for a small fixed blade, and it holds up.

Turquoise on a handle that gets used

Being honest about it: the turquoise is the softest thing on this knife, and it will show a scuff before the steel does or the pins do. It is there because it looks like nothing else, not because it improves the grip. If you want a small skinner you can be careless with, the Hornback buffalo horn skinner is the tougher answer at a similar size.

Who this suits

Someone who wants a handsome small knife on their belt for camp and for close work, and who does not need reach. It is the wrong knife for quartering an elk, wrong for batoning, and wrong if you want something you can throw in a truck box and forget. At 3.5 oz it disappears on a belt, which is most of why people who own one keep it there. Our skinning knife guide sets out where a blade this short runs out of length.

Questions before you buy

Does it have a gut hook? No. This pattern is a plain edge with a swedge along the spine and no hook cut into it anywhere.

Is 3.5 oz too light to be useful? No. On a short belt knife light is the point, and what mass there is sits close to your hand.

Will the pattern-welded blade corrode? Not if you dry it. It is high carbon steel and it responds to being left wet. Our guide on whether Damascus knives rust answers the question properly.
