What this sword is

It is built for collectors and display: a hand-forged, fully-functional traditional build with a premium scabbard, meant to be a statement piece for the study, the office, or the collection wall. The blade runs twenty-two inches with very little curvature, which is what separates the ninjato silhouette from the pronounced sori of a classical katana, and the ten inch handle gives it room for a genuine two-handed grip. Balance sits close to the collar, so it feels considerably lighter in the hand than the length suggests.

The blade

Layers of high-carbon steel are welded, folded and drawn out before the bar is profiled, then hardened and tempered in oil. The etch brings up a dense, cloudy figure that changes character along the length — tighter near the collar, opening into broad swirls toward the tip. Because the pattern is metallurgical rather than applied, it survives sharpening and polishing; take material off and the next layer down carries the same story. Our Damascus katana and samurai sword guide explains how these are put together and what to look for when comparing swords.

Mounting and scabbard

The handle is turned from olive wood, its grain running warm gold to olive brown with the darker figure olive is prized for, and it is finished bare rather than wrapped so the timber is the point. At the guard sits a small collar with a pale spacer, seating the blade cleanly into the mouth of the saya. The scabbard is wood as well, shaped and finished to match the handle, which is a quieter and more traditional presentation than lacquer and cord. Anyone assembling a rack should also look at the BMK-561 Damascus katana, which takes a different approach to the same length.

Made in Memphis

The billet is welded, the blade forged and ground, the fittings made and the sword put together at our bench in Memphis, Tennessee. It carries a lifetime warranty, and upwards of two thousand verified reviews describe what comes off that bench. Where a sword is being presented or marks a milestone, engraved lettering can be commissioned for twenty-nine dollars more.

Handling and care

Treat it as a sharp object even though it will spend most of its life on a stand. Handle the blade with a cloth rather than bare fingers, since skin acids leave prints that etch in over time. Wipe it down and lay on a very thin film of protective oil before it goes back into the wood, and pull it out to check it a few times a year rather than leaving it sheathed and forgotten. Horizontal storage on a stand, edge up, is kindest to both blade and scabbard, and our guide on storing knives and blades properly covers humidity, racks and what to avoid.
