Telling forged pattern from printed pattern

The steel listed above is pattern-welded 1095 and 15N20, forge-welded and then etched so the two alloys darken at different rates. The test is simple: on a forged billet the pattern goes through the blade, so it stays visible on the cutting edge and reappears every time you sharpen. A printed or acid-stenciled pattern sits on the flats only and vanishes at the bevel. Look at the edge under a light. One blade or several

This is a single-blade folder, which means one lock, one pivot, one thing to maintain, and the whole handle width available to that blade. The alternative is a multi-blade pattern, where you get a saw or a smaller secondary edge at the cost of a thinner main blade and more places for grit to hide. Neither is better. What the tanto point gives up

Strength at the tip is the whole reason this profile exists. Thick steel carries all the way forward, and the two bevels join at a hard shoulder instead of blending into a curve, so the point resists snapping under load better than any drop point ground to the same thickness. The price is the missing curve. Anything you would ordinarily roll an edge through, such as peeling fruit or working around a bone, feels blunt and awkward here. Sharpening is also two separate operations rather than one, because the front bevel sits at its own angle. Decide which of those matters more to you before you order.

Keeping it right

Carbon-steel Damascus in a pocket meets sweat, which is worse for it than rain. Dry the blade before you close it. Once a month, work warm water through the pivot, dry it thoroughly, and put a single drop of light machine oil on the pivot. Skip the wax and the heavy grease; they collect lint. If a bloom of gray appears on the flats over the first year, leave it. It is oxidation that has stabilized and it protects the steel underneath.

Things worth knowing first

Does the pattern wear off? No. It runs through the thickness of the steel.

Is it stiff out of the box? Usually a little. The action loosens over the first fortnight of use.
