Intended for: daily carry rather than display. The drop point is the shape that does the widest range of ordinary jobs without being especially good at any one of them, which is exactly what you want in a pocket.

Why a drop point

The spine curves down to meet the edge, so the tip finishes below the line of the spine. That gives you a strong point that will not snap off in a box seam, and a belly long enough to slice with. Clip points give a finer tip and break more; sheepsfoot blades give none at all. The full comparison is in knife blade shapes.

The handle materials

Rosewood scales with bands of cut pearl shell inlaid across them, pinned and sanded flush. Shell reflects differently along each growth line, so the handle changes as you turn it, and no two panels are cut alike. The wood is dense and closed-grained, which is what keeps it stable against the shell instead of swelling past it.

Where to keep it

A folder that lives in a drawer with other knives will pick up scratches on the flat and grit in the pivot. Stand it separately, open if you have the room, and away from anything damp. Storing knives properly covers sheaths, blocks and drawer inserts. For a fixed blade of similar pocket size, the mirror polished push dagger takes a different approach to the same problem.

Four inches closed

Closed length is the number that decides whether a folder actually gets carried. At around four inches this one sits upright in a front jeans pocket without the butt standing proud of the seam, and it does not print through a suit trouser. Anything much over four and a half inches starts to feel like a tool you have to plan around rather than one you forget about.

Care: stainless steel forgives more than carbon does, but the pivot still collects lint and the wood still dries out. Blow the joint clear every few weeks, put one drop of light oil in it, and wipe the scales with oil twice a year. Do not store it in the leather pouch; leather is tanned with salts that sit against metal.

FAQs

How sharp does it arrive? Shaving sharp out of the box. VG10 takes a fine finish and holds it for a knife this size.

Is the blade Damascus? No. It is VG10 stainless with a satin finish, which is why there is no pattern on it.

Can it be engraved? Yes, $29 at checkout. On a blade this small we usually put the text on the flat near the ricasso.
