Built for: carrying daily without looking like everyone else’s clip knife. Eight inches open is a big folder, and the dense wood scales hold a grip that polished metal simply cannot.
Wenge is not a soft wood
Wenge is dark, heavy and open-grained, and it behaves nothing like the burls and stabilized woods you see on most knife handles. It resists denting. It also splinters if it is worked wrong, which is why you rarely find it on cheap knives. Over years it goes almost black while the grain lines stay visible as fine grooves, and that open grain is exactly why it grips when your hands are damp. If you like handles that stay glassy, wenge is the wrong wood for you.
Brass pins, steel bolster, two aging curves
The stainless bolster will look much the same in ten years. The brass will not. It dulls to a warm gold, then to a brown patina, and it does that fastest where your fingers rest. You can bring it back with metal cream in under a minute, any time you like, or leave it alone. Most owners stop bothering after the first year and prefer the result.
Five point six ounces in a pocket
This is a heavy folder. Not absurd, but you will know it is there, and it will pull on light trousers. Carried in a jacket or on a belt it disappears. If you want something that vanishes in jeans, this is not it. The weight buys you a wide blade and real handle material instead of skeletonized liners and moulded plastic.
Care: the pivot needs a routine more than the blade does. Flush it with warm water if grit gets in, dry it thoroughly with the blade open, then put one drop of light oil on the pivot. One, not five, or it will collect lint. The 440C only asks to be dried. The wenge wants nothing at all for the first few years; after that a rub of paste wax restores the depth if handling has left it gray. Never soak a wood-handled folder.
FAQs
How do I clean the pivot without stripping it down? Warm water, a drop of dish soap, work the blade open and shut a dozen times, rinse, then dry it open. Our pocket knife cleaning guide covers the compressed-air version.
Is a folder strong enough for hunting? For caping and small game, yes. For anything that puts side load on the blade, no. A lock is a mechanism, and mechanisms have a failure mode. If you want that job done without the worry, a fixed blade like the Dragon bowie has no lock to trust.
